Windfall for the Valley Springs Community Plan!
The next meeting of the Greater Valley Springs Advisory Group will feature a question and answer session with Tim McSorley, Executive Director of the Calaveras Council of Governments (COG).
COG was recently awarded a Community-Based Transportation Planning (CBTP) Grant from Caltrans in the amount of $204,648 to fund “Rural Smart Growth: A Community-Based Plan for Valley Springs.” Funding should be received in early 2009. The project will produce a community planning document consistent with the Calaveras County General Plan and the California Environmental Quality Act.
At the heart of the proposed community planning effort is a highly participatory public design process called a charrette. A charrette is a concentrated series of meetings, workshops and design sessions in which a professional design team works with the public to produce a collaborative vision or a plan. McSorley will further discuss this process at the meeting.
GVSAG Coordinating Committee Co-Chair Marti Crane says community participation is critical to a successful community plan. The next GVSAG meeting is at 7:00pm, Thursday, November 20, 2008, at the Community United Methodist Church on Laurel Avenue in Valley Springs. Monthly meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month, however the November meeting has been moved up one week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
The GVSAG encourages broad public participation in community planning and in the general plan update. “We need your ideas and look forward to seeing you there!” says Crane.
